KUALA LUMPUR: The government is satisfied that controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik does not promote terrorism, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

Zahid, who is also the Home Minister said, it drew the conclusion after the ministry had gone through all the videos and transcript of speeches made by Zakir, both locally and overseas.
He added allegations of Zakir promoting hate speech might be due to his words being taken out of context.
"We have gone through all of his speeches and none of them was found to be promoting terrorism," he said.
"The interpretation (of promoting terrorism) was made by several figures overseas. The incident in Dhaka was a perception of that country," he told parliament yesterday while replying to points raised during the debate on the budget.
The controversial preacher is being sought by India for alleged link to terrorism, including a terror attack in Dhaka, Bangladesh, last year that had left scores of people dead.
In April, Zahid had confirmed that the government has granted permanent resident status to Zakir five years ago.
Zahid also dismissed foreign news report indicating that Zakir had tried to apply for citizenship in Malaysia.
He added the government would repatriate the preacher to India if it received a request of Mutual Legal Assistance.
Zahid said so far the Indian government had not sent any request to Malaysia to extradite the preacher.
"I have met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Zakir was among the matters raised. At that time, there was no request to extradite Zakir," he said.
Zahid said Zakir would continue to enjoy his permanent resident status as long as he did not breach any laws or promote terrorism in Malaysia.

JOHOR BARU: The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, has ordered the controversial Muslim-only launderette in Muar to immediately stop its discriminatory practice or risk being shut down by him.
Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017

“I cannot accept this nonsense. This is Johor, which belongs to Bangsa Johor and it belongs to all races and faiths. This is a progressive, modern and moderate state.
“This is not a Taliban state and as the Head of Islam in Johor, I find this action to be totally unacceptable as this is extremist in nature,” he said.
His Majesty said he also ordered the state Islamic religious affairs committee chairman Abdul Mutalip Abd Rahim, the religious council and the district council to investigate the matter.
The Sultan added that he had also spoken to Mufti Johor Datuk Mohd Tahrir Samsudin as well as state exco for religion Abd Mutalip Abd Rahim over the matter.
“I want the owner to apologise to me and the people of Johor. He has made Johoreans very angry and embarrassed because this is not the Johor we want.
“The owner has gone against the vision of a united, harmonious, moderate and tolerant Johor. If he still insists on carrying on the Muslim-only practice, he can leave Johor. I suggest he set up shop in Afghanistan. His thinking is sick and goes against everything that Johor stands for.”
His Majesty, who was visibly upset, said he and his family members were “deeply appalled” by the action of the launderette owner, saying if this was not stopped, it would lead to more narrow-minded actions in the name of Islam.
Pictures of the launderette went viral last week when it was reported that it had a sign saying that only Muslims were allowed to use its machines.
He said the owner had first put up his Muslim-only notices and after the issue became controversial, the owner put up a new sign to say it was “Muslim-friendly.”
“Don’t try to be clever. It’s still the same. The owner needs to have his brains cleaned up.
“I want to put a stop to such extremism. Extremism has no place in my state. We take pride in being Bangsa Johor and I want to know where the owner of this launderette learn his Islam? Islam teaches the faithful to be tolerant and respect other people and faiths,” he said at Istana Bukit Serene here yesterday,
On Monday, Johor Prince Tunku Idris Sultan Ibrahim expressed dismay over the launderette’s move, asked: “Is this for real? I’m appalled” in his Instagram.
The Sultan said the mosques in Johor were open to non-Muslims, for example, as long as they were properly dressed and he could not imagine non-Muslims being banned from entering the mosques, saying he was concerned over rising religious extremism.
“I wonder where this launderette owner washes his clothes when he is overseas? Is he saying only the clothes of Muslims are clean and those of non-Muslims are unclean? That’s what he means, I believe.
“From now on, I am directing the state executive council and all the councils to insist that any business owners who carry out such blatant discriminatory practices should have their licences revoked. Don’t mess around with your narrow-minded religious prejudices.”
His Majesty added that he could not keep quiet on the issue, as if this was allowed to go unnoticed, “then next we will have taxis for only Muslims or non-Muslims.”
He said he also did not want other races to carry out similar actions.

I am only being a good Muslim, says laundry owner

MUAR: The owner of the “Muslim-only” launderette here said he was only trying to be a good Muslim.
Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017
The 40-year-old owner, who declined to be named, said he set up the launderette from the Muslim point of view to cater to the demand for such services.
“For Muslims, it is not just about clean clothes but cleanliness as a whole. I am just providing an avenue for Muslims to do that,” he said.
He added that he did not expect the issue to be blown out of proportion and become such a sensitive topic. He hoped non-Muslims would understand the Muslim point of view and teachings.
“Muslims include Chinese and Indians as well so the launderette does not racially discriminate,” he said.
He said non-Muslims have a lot of choices and self-service launderettes were available nearby, including one that was some 300m from his outlet.
Meanwhile in Gelang Patah, MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said businesses should not use religious sensitivities and racial differences in their operations as it might lead to a negative domino effect.
“A launderette should be open to all.
“We should be understanding of each other and not use our differences to break the ties in our multi-cultural society,” he said after launching the Alibaba Global Course in Forest City yesterday.
Liow said the launderette’s actions to restrict its customers to a certain religion could start a bad chain reaction.

PETALING JAYA: The Indian government has revoked the passport of controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik (pic).
According to The Times of India, the revocation by the regional passport office in Mumbai follows a recommendation from India's National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The agency has already booked him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act over his speeches, which allegedly incited youth to commit terror acts.
It then moved for the revocation of his passport after his failure to respond to multiple notices asking him to join the investigation and for not cooperating with them.
The revocation will now restrict his movements, say officials, as Zakir reportedly travels between Saudi Arabia, where he was granted citizenship recently, Malaysia and other countries after leaving India in 2016, The Times of India reported.
A non-bailable warrant was issued against him on April 21, and during its issuance, a special NIA court in Mumbai had said that there were "reasonable grounds to believe that Naik is evading arrest and that he will not voluntarily appear before the court or before the agency".
It is also reported that NIA had also approached Interpol seeking a red corner notice against him.

DPM: Most who take up arms aren’t religious

The two Malaysians killed in a clash between militants and Philippine security forces in Marawi, Mindanao, were not schooled in Islamic studies, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Sunday, 28 May 2017

Bernama reported Dr Ahmad Zahid as saying that they had sought a shortcut to heaven by engaging in this so-called jihad.
“They did not have any Islamic education but wanted to be martyrs,” he said after the launch of a Quran learning and recital programme at Masjid Al Hidayah in Kampung Sungai Penchala yesterday.
Dr Ahmad Zahid said those who did not understand the Quran were more inclined to engage in terrorism because they often misinterpreted the scriptures in the holy book.
He said they also became obsessed with certain individuals who made use of religion and performed acts that deviated from the teachings of the Quran.
The two Malaysians were among 13 militants killed by soldiers who were hunting Isnilon Hapilon, a leader of Abu Sayyaf terrorists active in the southern Philippines, and the Maute group, which have ties with Islamic State (IS).
Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Home Minister, said a study found that 87% of those engaged in terrorist activities did not have basic religious education.
At the launch, Dr Ahmad Zahid donated 320 copies of the Quran to the programme.
In Petaling Jaya, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said Ramadan was more than just fasting.
Dr Asyraf, who holds the portfolio in Islamic affairs, said in Arabic, fasting literally meant to refrain.
“This is not only from food and drinks but also from evil actions, thoughts and words.
“Muslims are to make peace with those who have wronged us, strengthen ties with family and friends and do away with bad habits to clean up our lives, thoughts and feelings,” he said.

‘Zakir not promoting terrorism’

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has dismissed suggestions that controversial Muslim preacher Dr Zakir Naik is promoting terrorism. Ahmad Zahid said he had obtained information on several of Zakir's speeches in other countries, including in his home country India, and believes that the latter's speeches had been taken out of context.

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has dismissed suggestions that controversial Muslim preacher Dr Zakir Naik is promoting terrorism.
Ahmad Zahid said he had obtained information on several of Zakir's speeches in other countries, including in his home country India, and believes that the latter's speeches had been taken out of context.
"From the information that I have, he did not mean it; he did not mean to promote terrorism. We saw that he was awarded the 'Tokoh Maal Hijrah' (in 2013) because of his contributions.
"It's only that he was seen as questioning other religions. Even though he is a medical doctor, his interest is to do dakwah, the preaching of Islam ... We believe he is a very wise man," he told a press conference after attending the 2016 National Level Key Target Area Seminar here today.
Earlier, Ahmad Zahid announced the allocation of RM400,000 to renovate and upgrade the Gurdwara Sahib Sentul.
He said the refurbishment of the gurdwara will be fully funded by the government and advised the Sentul gurdwara to channel the donations they get from the Sikh community to other gurdwaras that are in need.
"Therefore any donations this gurdwara gets, it should be channelled to help other gurdwaras in the country," he said when addressing the more-than-a-thousand-strong crowd at the Sentula gurdwara during the Vaisakhi celebrations.
Ahmad Zahid said although the Sikh community in Malaysia is a religious minority, the mutual respect among religious factions in Malaysia is what makes the nation unique.
Meanwhile, the Gurdwara Sahib in Petaling Jaya saw a crowd of about 5,000 to 7,000 devotees.
Vaisakhi marks the formation of the Khalsa in 1699 which formed the core of Sikhism and elevated it to newer heights.

The poster indicated that the sermon is jointly organised by the Perlis Islamic Religious Affairs Department, the Islamic and Perlis Islamic Affairs and Malay Customs Council, and the office of the Perlis mufti.
The sermon will be delivered at the state mosque in Arau.
In the poster, Dr Zakir is described as a “researcher and caller to Islam”.
Last month, Dr Zakir visited a private Islamic-centric university in Shah Alam, Selangor, which is also under investigation for radical teachings after two students were arrested on suspicion of being Islamic State recruits planning a terror attack locally.
Although a fugitive in India, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said the controversial Islamic preacher is free to travel in Malaysia because he is not on the terror list here.
He has been reported by several Indian newspapers to be on the run to avoid prosecution in India.
The Salafist preacher has also been banned from several countries like Bangladesh, Canada and the UK.
In November last year, Times of India reported the Indian government has imposed a five-year ban on Dr Zakir’s NGO, the Islamic Research Foundation.
The daily reported that India’s authorities are also mulling terror charges against Dr Zakir, reportedly based on testimonies of about 50 terror suspects and convicts recorded from various jails, with those caught citing the medical doctor as their motivation and source of inspiration.

Deputy home minister: Zakir Naik welcome as not on Malaysia’s terror list

A fugitive in India, controversial Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik is free to travel in Malaysia because he is not on the terror list here, Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said.

The televangelist with his own Internet channel had last week visited a private Islamic-centric university in Shah Alam, Selangor, which is also under investigation for radical teachings after two students were arrested on suspicion of being Islamic State (IS) recruits planning a terror attack locally.

“He is free to travel. He is not on [the] terror list here,” the deputy home minister told Malay Mail Online when asked how Dr Zakir was allowed passage into Malaysia, despite being on the terror alert list in his home country, India.

He has been reported by several Indian newspapers to be on the run to avoid prosecution in India. The Salaƚst preacher has also been banned from several countries like Bangladesh, Canada and the UK.

Dr Zakir, who was honoured by the Malaysian government with the 2013 Tokoh Maal Hijrah award, visited the Al Madinah International University campus on December 14 and was given a warm welcome by its management.

‘It takes decades’: Deputy minister denies claim Zakir Naik now Malaysian citizen

“Not true,” Nur Jazlan told Malay Mail Online when contacted.
“There are many processes to follow and it takes decades to become a citizen,” he added.
Nur Jazlan also told The Star Online that Malaysia does not automatically confer citizenship on anybody, unless said person is born in the country to Malaysian parents.
The Pulai MP said he did not think that Dr Zakir would want to apply for Malaysian citizenship.
Indian news outfit Hindustan Times cited unnamed representatives of Dr Zakir as saying that the Mumbai-based televangelist’s so-called Malaysian citizenship had come as a “package” together with his “Tokoh Maal Hijrah” award that he received from Malaysia in 2013.
The publication also claimed that Dr Zakir now holds dual Indian-Malaysian citizenship although Malaysia does not allow such a thing.
Hindustan Times said the fact that Dr Zakir is purportedly a Malaysian citizen on Malaysian soil would complicate investigations, as Malaysia has not allowed any extradition to India despite signing a treaty in 2010.
The Muslim preacher is believed to be currently in Malaysia.
Earlier this month, Times of India reported that the Indian government had imposed a five-year ban on Dr Zakir’s NGO, the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF).
The daily reported that India’s National Investigation Agency is mulling terror charges against Dr Zakir, reportedly based on testimonies of about 50 terror suspects and convicts recorded from various jails, with those caught citing him as their motivation and source of inspiration.
In April this year, the state of Terengganu offered Dr Zakir three islands for the preacher to open a branch for IRF, in addition to a religious school.
